Don Pomodoro brand Garlic, Oil and Chili Pepper. It has just
enough heat and garlic without overwhelming the palate. Take a nice
crusty loaf of bread, lay down just a few slices of some nice mild
Italian cheese, say Bra Duro or Trugole, and then spread a
little of this wonderful Italian condiment. Let some of the red pepper-
tinted oil soak into the bread and you've got a simple, stellar meal.

Freekeh Albawady. This smoky wheat product from Syria has quite a
story behind it. Apparently, when wheat farmers in the distant past
ran out of their stores of last year's grain and the new crop was
still growing in the field, they would harvest some of the green
unripe wheat to survive. To separate the seed from the stalks they
would dry the sheaths and then light them on fire to burn off the
chaff. They ended up with smoky green wheat that was lower in carbs
than ripened wheat and higher in B vitamins. AND it tastes great in
pilafs.

Grapeseed Oil. A completely taste free, high smoking point oil.
Canola oil has a gassy/cabbage like odor to it, and peanut oil does taste a
little like peanuts but grapeseed oil is completely neutral and has
some of the same health benefits as red wine without the alcohol. The
French use it to make perfect mayonnaise. PFI carries a couple of
brands.

Mamoune brand Fig Jam with Walnuts. This Lebanese product is really
more of a sweet chunky confit. Serve it at Tea with a soft spreadable
goat cheese like Greek Manouri or French Chevre and some not-too-sweet
cookies and no one will miss the crumpets. Especially if the tea is
Turkish and served in tall clear glasses.

Steel Cut or Pinhead Oats. As a kid, I hated oatmeal. It was gooey
and slimy. But we didn't have Steel Cut Oats back then, available only
in high-end import shops and health food stores for a whole lot more
than rolled oats. Mom only bought viscous rolled oats because they
were cheaper (she WAS of Scottish descent after all). At PFI we sell
Steel Cut Oats  for the same price as the wall-paste variety. Try
soaking oats, one cup oats to one cup water, overnight and then
throwing in another cup of water before cooking in the morning for
very quick oats without the glue.
